Sheffield Steelers vs Braehead Clan 23.12.17

After a comfortable Tuesday night Challenge Cup victory, the Steelers were to face Christoffer Björklund and the Braehead Clan on a Saturday night. However, once more, there was a delay to the face-off in the second Sheffield Steelers-Clan game of the season, a power shortage in the arena pushing face-off back by 20 minutes.

Steve Brown was tonight’s referee, with Dave Farren and Paul Staniforth on the lines. The Steelers were without Kieran Brown still through injury, but it didn’t really affect the lineup too much.

The first period was a quiet one, only one penalty, and no goals. The lines were a little different for 20 minutes, Liam Kirk placed on the top line with Colton Fretter and Mathieu Roy. Ervins ‘the Moose’ Mustukovs was on fire, making some incredible saves to stop the Clan from scoring.

sheffield steelers21:38 was the time of the first goal, the time of the gorgeous wrist-shot from Matt Marquardt which sneaked through the 5-hole from the top of the circle. John Armstrong was credited with the assist on the stunning goal.

Penalties came towards the middle of the second period, Bari McKenzie for slashing, Levi Nelson for slashing and Tyler Scofield for delaying the game. That was it for the second period, the Steelers leading the game 1-0, so the third and final frame was pretty much all to play for!

The third period started with a couple of minor penalties but headed in the right direction when Colton Fretter found the back of the net, Mathieu Roy, and Mark Matheson picking up the helpers. Matheson was on fire lately, being in the right place at exactly the right time and had to be the best defenseman in the league.

Extremely strong communication skills from Ben O’Connor and Davey Phillips came from the defensive zone all night, which definitely led to a positive outcome. Mathieu Roy found the empty net with 1:32 remaining in the game, finishing off a 3-0 victory for the Steelers, as well as the third shutout of the season for Ervins Mustukovs.

It was a strong two points for the Steelers before a tough Christmas schedule of two games against the Panthers, two against the Storm and then two against the Giants. It will be a tough ask, however, the boys will put in their all no matter what.
